  3. How do you use these prompts?

How do you remember a trip?

A few days after a trip, the big moments are still there and the small ones are already going. The smell of a street, the thing that went wrong and made everyone laugh.

These ten prompts ask for those, out loud, about a minute each. Do one or two the first evening you are home. If you use a voice journal like Dearly, it writes the page for you while you talk.

Dearly's record screen asking what's been on your mind today, with the orb ready to start a spoken entry.

What questions should you ask after a trip?

The small details that are already fading. Do one or two the first evening you are home.

  1. What was the best moment of the whole trip?
  2. What did I see that I keep thinking about?
  3. How would I describe this trip in three words?
  4. What did I do there that I wouldn’t do at home?
  5. What did I bring back that isn’t in my bag?
  6. Who would I take with me next time?
  7. What would I do differently?
  8. What smell or sound takes me straight back there?
  9. What was the funniest thing that went wrong?
  10. What do I want to tell my friends about it first?

How do you use these prompts?

  • Start in the first few days. The small details go first, so earlier is better.
  • Answer with a story. “The funniest thing that went wrong” wants the whole story, not a label.
  • Do it with someone else. Ask the question, let them answer, then answer yourself.
  • Keep adding. If another memory turns up next week, record it. The trip does not end at the airport.
